Türkiye or Turkey? A name, a bird and a mistake worth undoing
FactThe United Nations changed the country's name in its records from "Turkey" to "Türkiye" in June 2022, after a letter from Ankara, and the change took effect the moment the letter was received. The move had started the previous December, when a presidential memorandum asked the public to use "Türkiye" in every language and told exporters to print "Made in Türkiye."
The old English name is much older than that. "Turkey" appears in English in the late fourteenth century as "Turkie," meaning the land of the Turks. About a century and a half later the same word was attached to a bird. Guinea fowl reached Europe through the Ottoman Empire, so Europeans called them turkey-cocks and turkey-hens. When a similar-looking fowl arrived from the Americas, it got the name too. Neither bird is native to Turkey.
Other languages made their own guesses. The French dinde (literally "chicken from India") and the Turkish hindi ("Indian") both point to India, a guess that came from the then-common belief that the New World was eastern Asia. Both are geographic mistakes that stuck.
The word then took on a life of its own. English dictionaries list "turkey" as slang for a stupid, incompetent or unappealing person, and for a play or production that flops. Etymologists date the "failure" sense to show-business slang of the 1920s and link it to the bird's reputation for stupidity, not to the country.
OpinionNone of this was ever an insult aimed at a country. It was a chain of accidents: a trade route, a misidentified bird, a slang word that rode along. That is exactly why it can be undone. A name the country does not use for itself, tangled up with a bird named by mistake and with a word for failure, is hard to defend as tradition. Reports at the time described Ankara's campaign as part of an effort to separate the country's name from the bird. We cannot see motives from here. We can judge the result on its merits: "Türkiye" is what the country calls itself.
Correcting a mistake does not erase history. The old name stays in books and in the dictionary. What should change is the habit of repeating a confusion once we know how it began. People still say "Turkey" out of habit, not malice, and that is forgivable. Keeping the old name after learning this is a choice, and we would rather not make it.
This site writes "Türkiye." Where it writes "Turkey," it means the old spelling or the bird.

Süreç bir önceki aralık ayında başlamıştı: Bir Cumhurbaşkanlığı genelgesi kamuoyundan her dilde "Türkiye" adının kullanılmasını, ihracatçılardan da ürünlere "Made in Türkiye" yazılmasını istemişti.
